Mom in Science, Sandra Fehsenfeld

Sandra Fehsenfeld, PhD

Born and raised in Germany, Sandra came to Canada (Winnipeg) in 2011 for her PhD thesis. Now as a "grown up" marine biologist and comparative animal and environmental physiologist, she is interested in the acclimation/adaptation capacity of aquatic invertebrates (crustaceans) and vertebrates (teleosts) to their variable aquatic environment. Her research aims to investigate the mechanisms of acid-base regulation in a fluctuating habitat particularly with respect to global change, and especially with regards to their endocrine control.

As a mom of a 6 year old storm trooper and 3 year old princess with a shift-working hubby, Sandra's days are filled with "all the other stuff" while surviving between -40°C and +40°C in the Canadian prairies.

As the co-founder of AllOW, Sandra is very passionate about supporting fellow Moms in Science, as well as science outreach and communication.
